About This Work

KIDS Consortium has been awarded a three-year grant from the federal Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), Learn and Serve America Program, for a project that engages four design sites and three expansion sites in work to implement and document high quality service-learning projects in the STEM disciplines.  As a result of this work, we will create a SL/STEM Guide for middle school teachers that integrates the KIDS SL model with national/state STEM standards and research-based instructional strategies.  This guide will be disseminated to state and national audiences.

Key CNCS priorities for this grant include:
  • promoting the use of high-quality service-learning to address STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) objectives in middle schools with high percentages of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds
  • expanding the use of service-learning as a teaching strategy to increase students' motivation to learn, community problem solving skills, and readiness for careers and post-secondary education
  • engaging young people in service-learning  activities that address community needs in order to build healthier communities
