Swallowtail Fiddlers Recording for Team Alexis

Project Title: Swallowtail Fiddlers Recording for Team Alexis

Grade/School: 5-7 at Conners-Emerson School

Teacher: Rebecca Edmondson

Project Description: A former student and classmate of these students is fighting a rare form of cancer. The students expressed a desire to help her out in some way. Community partners Rick Barter, Bing Miller have helped make this project a success. The students have learned a variety of musical styles. They will record 19 tunes that they have chosen from their repertoire, displaying varying keys, tempi, and styles showcasing technique and musicality that they have learned. They have also learned about the technology involved with creating CD’s, flyers, and DVD’s. The Swallowtail fiddlers were able to donate funds to help out Team Alexis.

Childhood Obesity

Need/Problem: Childhood Obesity

Project Idea: Youth learn about the lifelong health and disease risks caused by poor eating habits and exercise patterns in childhood and the impact it can have on families and society. They use technology to create a website for other students advocating for healthy eating and exercise habits, and advertise the website in flyers posted around their community.

Our Leadership Team

In 2005, MDIRSS instituted a Service Learning Leadership Team (SLLT). The team meets regularly and now inclues five building principals, the assistant superintendent, a teacher from each school building, three students, three community partners, Tracy Harkins-Educational Programs Coordinator from KIDS Consortium and an AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer. The team meets monthly as a large-group, and bi-weekly in focused subcommittees.

About Service Learning

What is Service Learning?

Service learning is a teaching strategy that connects classroom instruction with community service experiences engaging youth in their schools and communities. Students are challenged to identify, research and solve real problems, and then evaluate their learning and effectiveness. Service-learning is seen as a powerful strategy to implement essential standards, but also assists us in fulfilling our MDI Regional School System educational mission and vision.

The model of service learning that our district follows is taken from the KIDS Consortium model. KIDS Consortium is a national leader in providing technical assistance to schools implementing service-learning projects. This model has three distinct segments:

Academic Integrity- Each project has defined learning objectives that relate to state standards and local curriculum.

Apprentice Citizenship- Students become more involved in their communitities through partnerships with community members, working together toward a common goal/need.

Student Ownership- Students share in decision-making with adults, and adults share in learning with students- acting as partners and coaches rather than experts.
