K-2 Art Curriculum Standards

Grades K-8 Art Essential Standards

The student will:

  1. Show an understanding of concepts, skills, vocabulary and processes in art. (K-2)
  2. Create, communicate and express through art. (K), (1), (2), ...
  3. Approach artistic problem-solving using multiple solutions and the creative process.
  4. Observe, describe and analyze works of art (K-2), (3-5), (6-8)
  5. Understand the relationship between the arts, history and world culture. (K), ...
  6. Collaborate and make connections between the arts, other disciplines and daily life.
K-2 Supporting Art Standards:

A. Communication - While creating and working in the visual arts, students will be effective communicators who:

1.  Use appropriate vocabulary to explain ideas and concepts in the visual arts.
2. View and respond to a variety of art work.

B.  Critical Thinking - While creating and working in the visual arts, students will be critical thinkers who:

1.  Use the arts to tell a story or narrate an experience.
2. Create art that reflects their personal world (family, friends, pets, school, home).
3.  Convey and elicit emotions, ideas and moods using a variety of media, tools, and techniques.
4. Recognize a variety of purposes for making / performing art works, including telling a story and communicating emotions and ideas.
5.  Learn and use problem solving skills while making art.
6.  Describe, observe, and ask questions about diverse examples of art.
7. Students identify choices that lead to success in the arts.
8.  Clarify self image through personal expression and reflection in the arts.
9. Create art that explores ideas, feelings, and personal expression using a variety of media, tool, and techniques.

C. Integration of Knowledge and Skills -  While creating and working in the visual arts students will be academically, artistically and technologically knowledgeable people who:

1.  Begin to use the Elements of Art and Principles of Design to make art.
2.  Identify and explore Elements of Art: color, form, line, shape, space, texture, and value.
3. Identify and explore the Principles of Design including pattern and balance, through brainstorming, observation and creative expression.
4. Learn to use tools safely when making art.
5. Learn to name and use a variety of tools, materials, and techniques through discovery, exploration and practice.
6. Develop work habits that foster the self-discipline and focus needed for the creative process.

D. Collaboration - While creating and working in the visual arts, students will be collaborative workers who:

1.  Respect the creative process, contributions and roles of others within a group.
2.  Develop skills in cooperation, group decision-making, interaction and leadership.
3. Learn to work with a partner or in a group and share materials and ideas to create a work of art.
4. Show tolerance for others in the art room and respect differing interpretations and solutions to aesthetic challenges.
5. Identify connections between and among the arts and other disciplines.

E. Global Citizenship -  While creating and working in the visual arts, students will be global citizens who:

1. Begin to explore art work from other cultures through observation and creative expression.
2.  Identify family or community symbols and celebrations in the visual arts from different world cultures.
3. Compare and contrast art work from different cultures.
4. Use community and local resources to learn about art.
5. Observe and explore art work from various historical periods.
6. Identify some art experiences in cultures around the world.
7. Demonstrate stewardship in the classroom.

F.  Lifelong Learning - While creating and working in the visual arts, students will be lifelong learners who:

1. Learn behavioral expectations by attending a variety of art events.
2. Identify some activities and careers for visual artists and describe the way the arts can make people feel.
