Grades 9-12 Library Curriculum Standards

Working DRAFT 2011-12

Grades 9-12

STANDARD A:  A student should understand how information and resources are organized.

1. Students will know: That libraries use classification systems to organize, store and provide access to information and resources.

A1a. Review and expand all skills as appropriate from K-8

A1b. Demonstrate how to access materials in various libraries

A1c. Recognize there are different classification systems

A1d. Identify areas in the library most useful for search by topic/subject

A1e. Use successful print and electronic search strategies

2. Students will know:  How library classification systems work.

A2a.  Review and expands all skills as appropriate from K-8

A2b.  Use learned skills to locate materials in other library databases

3. Students will know:  How information in print, non-print and electronic formats is organized and accessed

A3a. Review and expand all K-8 skills

A3b. Expand research projects to include the use of multiple types of resources (books, electronic formats, and non-print materials)

A3c. Change search strategies for different media

A3d. Use indices to locate appropriate materials

4:  Students will: Search for information and resources by author, title, or keyword, as appropriate

A4a. Review and expand all skills as appropriate from Primary, Intermediate and Middle School

5:  Students will: Identify and use search strategies and terms that will produce successful results

A5a. Review and expand skills from Primary, Intermediate and Middle School

STANDARD B:  A student should understand and use research processes necessary to locate, evaluate and communicate information and ideas.

Students will:

1. State a problem, question or information need.

B1a. Review and expand all Performance Indicators as appropriate from K, Primary, Intermediate and Middle School

B1b.  Formulate complete hypothesis or question relating to information need

B1c. Recognize need for searching a variety of sources

B1d.   Use search strategies to broaden or narrow specific topic

2. Consider the variety of available resources and determine which are most likely to be useful.

Students will:  (process skill)

B2a.  Review and expand all Performance Indicators as appropriate from K, Primary, Intermediate and Middle School

B2b. Examine poetry and folktales as genre from other cultures

B2c.  Demonstrate proficient use of a wide variety of literature and creative expressions

3:   Accesses information

B3a.  Review and expand all Performance Indicators as appropriate from K, Primary, Intermediate and Middle School

B3b. Use independent strategies to locate appropriate materials

B3c. Refine use of material which is age and interest appropriate

4:  Evaluate the validity, relevancy, currency and accuracy of information.

B4a. Reviews and expands all Performance Indicators as appropriate from K, Primary, Intermediate and Middle School

B4b. Identifies copyright of sources

B4c. Collaborates with others through technologies

B4d. Demonstrates by using certain books on a selected cart for information

5:  Organize and use information to create a product

B5a. Review and expand all Performance Indicators as appropriate from K, Primary, Intermediate and Middle School

B5b. Employ note taking skills to gather facts about a certain topic

B5c.  Employ outline strategies to organize information

B5d.  Refine selection of format and production skills to communicate message

6:   Evaluate the effectiveness of the product to communicate the intended message

B6a. Review and expand all Performance Indicators as appropriate from K, Primary, Intermediate and Middle School

B6b. Assesses other students’ products by using teacher-provided or student-developed rubrics

STANDARD C:  A student should recognize that being an independent reader, listener, and viewer of material in print, non-print, and electronic formats will contribute to personal enjoyment and lifelong learning.

Students will:

1:   Read for pleasure and information

C1a.  Review and expand all Performance Indicators as appropriate from K, Primary, Intermediate and Middle School

C1b.   Determine their own subject for research projects

C1c. Extend appreciation for authors of fiction and information Indicators revised to match

C1d.  Refines reading in search for information

C1e.   Understands selected materials may be appropriate for different people with other interests and abilities

C1f. Expands beyond print and media to use community resources (museum, film archives, businesses, interviews, medical establishments) for interest and information

2:   Read, listen, and view a wide variety of literature and other creative expressions

C2a. Review and expand all Performance Indicators as appropriate from K, Primary, Intermediate and Middle School

C2b.  Examine poetry and folktales as genre from other cultures

C3c.  Demonstrate proficient use of a wide variety of literature and creative expressions

3:  Recognize and select materials appropriate to personal abilities and interests

C3a.  Review and expand all Performance Indicators as appropriate from K, Primary, Intermediate and Middle School

C3b. Use independent strategies to locate appropriate materials

C3c. Refine use of material which is age and interest appropriate

STANDARD D: A student should be aware of the freedom to seek information and possess the confidence to pursue information needs beyond immediately available sources.

Students will:

1:  Know how to access information through local, national and international sources in printed and electronic formats

D1a. Reviews and expands all Performance Indicators as appropriate from Primary, Intermediate and Middle School

D1b. Uses ILL effectively

D1c. Expands beyond traditional sources to use interviews, videos and specialty libraries to access information

D1d.   Searches effectively online

D1e.   Demonstrates effective use of databases

2:  Recognize the importance of access to information and ideas in a democratic society

D2a.  Review and expand all Performance Indicators as appropriate from K, Primary, Intermediate and Middle School

D2b. Have the ability to verbalize the importance of access to information and ideas as   critical to the functioning of a democratic society

D2c.  Understand how censorship impacts a democratic society

3:  Access information on local, state, national and world cultures and issues

D3a. Reviews and expands all Performance Indicators as appropriate from K, Primary, Intermediate and Middle  School

D3b.  Can express both sides of local or national issues and is able to make a personal choice

D3c. Effectively uses the Internet to search for accurate and balanced information on cultures and countries

D3d. Seeks sources representing a variety of contexts, perspectives, cultures and evaluates usefulness

4:  Evaluate information representing diverse views in order to make informed decisions

D4a.   Reviews and expands all Performance Indicators as appropriate from K, Primary, Intermediate and Middle School

D4b. Develops the ability to evaluate the bias, accuracy, currency, relevancy, balance, stereotyping of various media

D4c. Justifies the use of a particular media and how it relates to their information need

5:  Assimilate and understand how newly acquired information relates to oneself and others

D5a.  Review and expand Primary, Intermediate and Middle School Performance Indicators as appropriate

D5b.   Recognize and reflect that exposure to different perspectives enhances one’s own world view

STANDARD E:  A student should understand ethical, legal and social behavior with respect to information resources

Student will:

1:  Use library materials and information resources responsibly

E1a. Reviews and expands all Performance Indicators as appropriate from K, Primary, Intermediate and Middle School

2:  Understand and respect the principles of intellectual freedom

E2a.  Reviews and expands all Performance Indicators as appropriate from Primary, Intermediate and Middle School

E2b.  Discusses/debates both sides of issues to show how access to information supports intellectual freedom

E2c.   Interacts in a rational way with those having differing opinions

E2d.  Defines intellectual freedom and discusses its application

3:  Understand and respect intellectual property rights and copyright laws

E3a.  Review and expand Primary, Intermediate and Middle School Performance Indicators as appropriate

E3b. Cite sources in correct format including endnotes, footnotes or internal citations

E3c.Adheres to copyright laws

E3d.  Seeks copyright clearance when necessary

4:  Develop and use citations and bibliographies

E4a.  Review and expand Primary, Intermediate and Middle School Performance Indicators as appropriate

E4b. Understands that paraphrasing is not enough for copyright compliance

E4c. Creates work cited lists in proper MLA format.

E4c. Demonstrates an awareness of other standard formats.
